Osteoporosis is categorized into Primary & Secondary types. Primary osteoporosis This accounts for 95% instances of osteoporosis. Lumbar vertebrae are the most susceptible bones for this category of the disease. Causes:
  1. Post-menopause for women
  2. Genetic history
  3. Hormone status – delay in first menstrual period & early last menstrual period
  4. Daily life routine – lack of exercise, extended bed-time, low-calcium & high-phosphate diet
  5. Low body weight
  6. Addictions – alcohol, coffee, cigarette
Secondary Osteoporosis Osteoporosis caused as a consequence of other diseases or harmful side-effect of some medication is termed as Secondary osteoporosis. Causes:
  1. Anti-inflammatory drugs – for treatment of asthma, rheumatism
  2. High dose of thyroid hormone
  3. Anti-coagulant derivatives
  4. Chronic digestive organ disorder – disease effected pancreas, intestine, liver, kidney
  5. Inflammatory disease like rheumatoid arthritis
  6. Hormone disorder – overactive thyroid gland, diabetes, tumours
